Giuga's Conjecture on Primality
نویسنده
چکیده
G. Giuga conjectured that if an integer n satisses n?1 P k=1 k n?1 ?1 mod n, then n must be a prime. We survey what is known about this interesting and now fairly old conjecture. Giuga proved that n is a counterexample to his conjecture if and only if each prime divisor p of n satisses (p ? 1) j (n=p ? 1) and p j (n=p ? 1). Using this characterization, he proved computationally that any counterexample has at least 1,000 digits; equipped with more computing power, E. Bedocchi later raised this bound to 1,700 digits. By improving on their method, we determine that any counterexample has at least 13,800 digits. We also give some new results on the second of the above conditions. This leads, in our opinion, to some interesting questions about what we call Giuga numbers and Giuga sequences.

Giuga's Conjecture on Primality
k=l Fermat's little theorem says that if p is a prime, then kP-l 3 lmodp for k = 1,.. .,p-1. Therefore, for each prime p, Sp--lmodp. The question becomes: Does there xist a non-prime n such that Sn 3 1 mod n? This question has resisted solution for more than forty years. After surveying what is known about the conjecture, we will give several new results here which might suggest directions of f...
متن کاملComputation of an Improved Lower Bound to Giuga's Primality Conjecture
Our most recent computations tell us that any counterexample to Giuga’s 1950 primality conjecture must have at least 19,908 decimal digits. Equivalently, any number which is both a Giuga and a Carmichael number must have at least 19,908 decimal digits. This bound has not been achieved through exhaustive testing of all numbers with up to 19,908 decimal digits, but rather through exploitation of ...
متن کاملSome remarks and questions about the AKS algorithm and related conjecture
We show that AKS-algorithm for primality testing ( see [1]) can be modified to run in Õ(log n) time. We present some remarks and ask two questions related to this algorithm.
متن کاملGLY Conjecture on Counting number of integral points in a general n-dimensional tetrahedra
Recently there has been tremendous interest in counting the number of integral points in n-dimensional tetrahedra with non-integral vertice due to its applications in primality testing and factoring in number theory and in singularities theory. The purpose of this paper is to summarize our previous works. A conjecture on sharp upper estimate of the number of integral points in n-dimensional tet...
متن کاملInfinitude of Elliptic Carmichael Numbers
In 1987, Gordon gave an integer primality condition similar to the familiar test based on Fermat’s little theorem, but based instead on the arithmetic of elliptic curves with complex multiplication. We prove the existence of infinitely many composite numbers simultaneously passing all elliptic curve primality tests assuming a weak form of a standard conjecture on the bound on the least prime in...
